Texas PTA Names Senator Lucio to Legislative Honor Roll

Austin, Texas - Today members of Texas PTA named Senator Eddie Lucio Jr. to PTA's Legislative Honor Roll for his work during the 83rd session of the Texas Legislature.

In October, 2009, the Texas PTA Legislative Action Committee created the Texas Legislative Honor Roll to recognize elected or appointed officials at the state level who supported the Texas PTA legislative agenda. Criteria for selection included:

Senator Lucio, (D) Brownsville, serves as the vice-chairman of the Senate Education Committee, and on Senate Business and Commerce, Finance, and State Affairs Committees. Sen. Lucio was a strong supporter of increased funding for public schools. He passed legislation to require ISDs to offer free breakfast to all students if 80% of their students qualify for the federal breakfast program, partnered with Rep. Farney to permit junior colleges to partner with technical institutes to provide career and technical classes for certification as part of a dropout recovery program, and passed several bills related to students with disabilities.

"Senator Lucio is a powerful advocate for Texas children and youth, said Lee Guerra, At-Large Member of the Board of Texas PTA. "He has made a career of working to improve opportunities for children, youth and public schools in the Texas Legislature. Texas PTA applauds his efforts on behalf of Texas children."

Individuals recognized for the Texas PTA Honor Roll should demonstrate initiative to enhance the quality of life for children and youth, improve the quality of education for all children and youth, strengthen families, improve child safety standards, show support for children, youth, families and PTA-related positions and lend support to a current Texas PTA legislative priority.

Texas PTA is the largest grassroots organization in Texas with half a million members - parents, teachers and others who have a special interest in children, youth, families and schools. Texas PTA is a noncommercial, nonsectarian-nonpartisan organization that does not endorse any candidate or political party.
