Senator Lucio's Statement on Senate Passage of Bill to Promote Space Flight in Cameron County
AUSTIN — Today, Senator Eddie Lucio, Jr. (D-Brownsville) releases the following statement on the occasion of Senate Passage of House Bill 2623 by Representative Rene Oliveira (D-Brownsville). The bill would require the state's General Land Office to promulgate rules on the closure of beaches affected by an FAA-approved space launch site. House Bill 2623 passed the Senate today on the Local and Uncontested Calendar.
"This legislation appropriately balances two compelling interests; the bill ensures the public's right to beach access, while also providing a way to protect public safety during commercial space launches," Senator Lucio said. "I'm proud to sponsor this legislation. Encouraging a new space industry, and the more than $50 million annual impact it will have on our regional economy, is vitally important. I thank Representative Oliveira for his leadership on this issue."
Senator Lucio and Representative Oliveira worked together to support passage of House Bill 2623. Senator Lucio was the bill's sponsor in the Senate. His companion bill, Senate Bill 1574, previously passed unanimously out the Senate Natural Resources Committee and was referred to the Senate Committee on Administration, which administers the Local and Uncontested Calendar. House Bill 2623 was referred to Administration, was substituted for Senate Bill 1574, and passed on the Local and Uncontested Calendar today.
