Senator Lucio raises awareness of the Texas Armed Services Scholarship Program

State Senator Eddie Lucio Jr. is accepting applications for The Texas Armed Services Scholarship Program, an award designed to promote participation in the armed services and in college chapters of Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC).

"Although I can only nominate one person for the scholarship, I look forward to a lively competition and also having the chance to meet some of the finest young people in my district," Senator Lucio said.

Recipients of the scholarship may be awarded up to $10,000 per year toward their undergraduate education at any Texas university with an active ROTC program.

In order to be eligible for nomination, students must meet at least two of the following criteria:

Recipients of the scholarship must maintain membership with their university ROTC chapter and, upon graduation, agree to a four year commitment to the Texas Guard, Army National Guard or Air National Guard, or to become a commissioned officer in the United States Armed Services.

For students who would like to be nominated for the current academic year (2011-2012), the deadline for submissions is February 7th. Nominations for the upcoming academic year (2012-13) can be made beginning in March.

Interested students should send an email of interest (no longer than 500 words) to ben.wright@senate.state.tx.us that details their eligibility for the scholarship, background, interest in the ROTC and Texas Armed Services, as well as any other information they want to share about themselves and their suitability. Persons of limited financial means are particularly encouraged to apply.
