Senator Eddie Lucio, Jr. Announces Start Of 2011-2012 High School Aerospace Scholars
Senator Eddie Lucio, Jr. is pleased to announce the launch of the 2011-2012 High School Aerospace Scholars (HAS) program. HAS enables selected Texas high school juniors to explore new frontiers in math and science, as well as becoming a part of NASA's plan for space exploration.
"If you are a student interested in science, math, engineering or technology, I strongly encourage you to apply," Senator Lucio said. "Such fields are critical to preparing you for future success in the global marketplace."
Selected students will apply their math and science skills to complete 10 web-based assignments during the school year. During the summer, selected students will travel to the Johnson Space Center in Houston and put those skills to use. At Johnson, they will design and propose a mission focused on deep space exploration alongside their peers and NASA scientists and engineers.
Eligible students are required to meet the following criteria:
- U.S. citizen Texas resident
- Currently a high school junior
- Interest in science, math, or engineering
- Available for a one-week residential experience during the summer
- Access to the internet and e-mail (home, school or public library)
The HAS program was begun in 1999 to encourage students to pursue studies and careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. More than 6,500 students from across the state have participated.
