AT&T, VERIZON COMPLETE CABLE PROJECT FOR WESLACO
Weslaco, Texas, July 24, 2009 - State Sen. Eddie Lucio Jr. announced today that Verizon and AT&T have completed a cable project that will ensure local residents and businesses keep phone service in the event of future cable cuts in the area.
Lucio spoke to companies as well as city officials and the Public Utility Commission after phone service was disrupted on several occasions when road construction crews accidentally cut telephone cables.
"Thanks to everyone working together, we now have additional, back-up facilities to ensure that the phones will keep working even if there are more cable cuts," said Lucio.
Lucio said he was concerned that Weslaco could become isolated from 911 service or dial tone.
"It was a public safety issue and also an economic development issue," he said. "Now nobody has to worry about losing phone service if another cable is cut. I commend all the entities for working together to resolve the problem."
