Memorial Day Remembrance
While Memorial Day signifies for all of us the ultimate sacrifice of our fallen soldiers, it also ushers in the last week before state bills that impact veterans, military personnel and their families can be voted out.
The 81st Legislative Session that began Jan. 13 culminates June 1.
What has been most impressive and meaningful to me have been the long trips many veterans have made to Austin--some more than once--to advocate not just for themselves, but for active duty personnel, their families and other veterans, especially the ill, disabled and those too elderly to travel.
The camaraderie of the battlefield--regardless of the branch of service or theater--has been evident throughout this session. I've greeted men and women who have lost limbs in battle, but proudly came to the Texas Capitol to remind us of their need for expanded health services, educational opportunities, employment options, more affordable housing and a host of other of life's necessities that they've rightfully earned. Many caravanned from the Rio Grande Valley, as well as from throughout South Texas, promoting worthwhile causes and adding more honor to the Memorial Day we so value!
