Senator Van de Putte Mourns Death of Nelson Mandela

(Austin) — Statement from state Senator Leticia Van de Putte, D-San Antonio, on the death of Nelson Mandela:

"Today, a great man left us. Nelson Mandela was not just a hero of South Africa, but for all of humanity -- an inspirational soul who possessed the courage to stand up to injustice, regardless of what it might cost him personally.

"On the 20th anniversary of his release from prison, I stood inside his former cell on Robben Island -- the place where he spent 18 of his 27 years of incarceration. I was overcome with emotion realizing what he sacrificed to end apartheid and free a people.

"A couple of quotes from President Mandela daily inspire me in my work as an elected official:

"Overcoming poverty is not a gesture of charity. It is an act of justice. It is the protection of a fundamental human right, the right to dignity and a decent life."

"Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world."
