Budget Proposal Requires a Vision for Texas' Future

(Austin) — Senator Leticia Van de Putte (District 26, Bexar County) released the following response to Gov. Rick Perry's budget statement today in Houston:

"Cut, cut, and cut fails to address how we deliver the essential services that Texans want. We need to get beyond always saying 'no' and start asking 'how?'

" 'No new taxes' just means Texans will pay spiraling property taxes for schools and local government. A blanket 'no' just continues to put pressure on rising college tuition for the middle class. A 'just say no' mentality is irresponsible and breaks the promises made to our veterans. Continued cuts in transportation will result in more toll roads.

"How long can we can continue burying our heads in the sand and giving out verbal campaign candy while Texas goes wanting for common sense approaches to funding public safety, a state water plan, and education for a rapidly growing population of school children?"
