Senator Van de Putte Ready to Get to Work on Committee Interim Charges
(Austin)—Today, the Senate Committee on Veteran Affairs and Military Installations (VAMI) was assigned its interim charges by Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst. Coming the day before Veterans Day, they are a timely reminder of the important work that the VAMI Committee performs for the veteran community of Texas. As Chair of the Committee, Senator Van de Putte has consistently addressed the unique needs of veterans in Texas, and has demonstrated a proven commitment to honoring their service to this country by passing legislation relating to veterans' education, employment, housing and mental health needs.
"I am very thankful to Lieutenant Governor Dewhurst for so promptly assigning these charges to my committee. I am eager to get to work on behalf of the men and women who keep us safe, and who make it possible for us to deliberate and debate in a representative democracy," she said.
"Texas is the number one state in the nation for veterans and their families, and a large part of the reason for that is the tremendous work we've been able to accomplish in the VAMI Committee over the course of the last several legislative sessions. The military plays a vital economic role in the state of Texas, and in addition to examining issues that directly affect the servicemember, my committee will be taking a very close look at the factors that ensure the military continues to maintain its vital presence in our cities and communities," she said.
"It is fitting that we receive these interim charges the day before Veterans' Day; in fact, it is an appropriate reminder of the very important work that the committee has before it. I am excited and ready to get started immediately on doing the right thing for our state's heroes by undertaking the thorough examination of these interim charges," she said.
