Senators Patrick and Van de Putte Team Up to Extend Veterans' Property Tax Exemptions to Surviving Spouses

Austin, TX — Today, Senate Joint Resolution 14 by Senator Leticia Van de Putte (D-San Antonio) and the enabling legislation Senate Bill 516 by Senator Dan Patrick (R-Houston) passed on the floor of the Senate. The bill will now move on to the House.

Current law exempts 100% disabled veterans from paying property taxes. However, this exemption expires when the veteran passes away. SB 516 and SJR 14 seek to recognize the service and the sacrifice of the disabled veteran's spouse by transferring the homestead exemption to the surviving spouse if they are married at the time of death. The exemption will cease upon the remarriage of the surviving spouse.

"As elected officials, it is our job to ensure that the concerns of military families are heard, and subsequently addressed," noted Senator Van de Putte. "This legislation is a direct result of our responsiveness to those Americans who serve on our behalf," said Senator Van de Putte.

"I am proud to help recognize the attendant sacrifices made by those married to disabled veterans," stated Senator Patrick. "By extending property tax exemptions for veterans to these deserving spouses, we are recognizing, at least in small measure, the very real sacrifices that families make for the defense of our country."
