Van De Putte Statement on Senate Passage of Texas Anti-Human Trafficking Act

"I am pleased that the Texas Senate has joined with me in the fight against this horrific crime. Texas has become a corridor for the trafficking of at least 20 percent of all victims in the United States. With those statistics, it is not just good policy but a responsibility for us to do all that we can to protect these human lives.

"S.B. 89 gives law enforcement the tools they need to recognize the victims of human trafficking and to prosecute those that prey on the innocent. Everyday thousands of defenseless children and vulnerable adults are trafficked through Texas and forced into jobs as laborers or as prostitutes. As an elected official, I understand my duty to speak for the voiceless and fight for the innocent.

"I look forward to working with Representative Thompson, who has championed this cause in the House, Governor Perry, and Attorney General Abbott. Human Trafficking is modern-day slavery and we as Texans, and as humans, cannot afford to allow these atrocities to continue."
