Dear Friend,

I hope this e-news finds you doing well. I am writing to you today to report the latest developments in the community college funding issue and to give you some helpful information for this flu season.

Consensus Reached on Community Colleges Funding
I am pleased to report that Gov. Rick Perry, Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst and Speaker Tom Craddick announced an agreement on community college funding this week. The plan is to allocate $99 million for the state’s share of health benefits, a one-time payment of $55 million as transitional funding for Fiscal Year 2009, and the development of an incentive funding program for community colleges.

In addition, a task force will be appointed to make recommendations, for consideration by the 2009 legislature, on how future incentive funds should be allocated. As a result of this agreement, leadership has also asked community colleges to rescind tuition, fee or tax increases adopted in Fiscal Year 2008 and any tuition, fee or tax increases under consideration for Fiscal Year 2009.

Free Flu Clinic on Saturday
As a health care professional, I fully realize the serious and possibly fatal symptoms that a person suffering from the flu can experience. In fact each year millions of people in the U.S. get sick with the flu and an average of 36,000 deaths occur.

The Center for Disease Control recommends people in the following groups for vaccination this season:

In an effort to combat this serious illness, I am joining the San Antonio Metropolitan Health District to host a Flu Clinic on Saturday, October 27, 2007 in the gymnasium of San Antonio College, located at 1300 San Pedro. The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This flu season, I urge you to protect your health and the health of your loved ones by taking advantage of the flu vaccine.

The flu vaccine will be provided free of charge by the San Antonio Metropolitan Health District thanks to a donation from the WellMed Charitable Foundation. Children under 19 with current Medicaid and CHIP, are asked to present their most current cards.

If you are unable to attend tomorrow's clinic, the San Antonio Metropolitan Health District will continue holding additional clinics throughout the month of November. For more information, please call (210) 207-8760 or visit www.sanantonio.gov/health.

Please have a safe and happy weekend; and take care of yourself this flu season.

Sincerely,
