Senator Van de Putte and UT Center for American History pay tribute to the late Congressman Henry B. Gonzalez

(AUSTIN, TX) -- On Thursday May 3, Senator Leticia Van de Putte (D-San Antonio), in partnership with the Center for American History at The University of Texas at Austin, will pay special tribute to the late Congressman Henry B. Gonzalez.

Congressman Gonzalez represented the constituents of District 26 (San Antonio/Bexar County) in the 55th, 56th and 57th legislative sessions, from 1957 to 1961. He was then elected to the United States Congress, where he served 18 consecutive terms until his retirement in 1999. Congressman Gonzalez died on November 28, 2000, leaving a legacy of public service and advocacy for the equality of all Americans.

The events of the day will celebrate what would have been Gonzalez' 91st birthday and commemorate the 50th anniversary of his service as the first Mexican American in the Texas Senate.
