E-News from the Office of Senator Van de Putte

I am excited to tell you about an excellent opportunity for undergraduate and graduate students. The Senate Hispanic Research Council is now accepting applications for the 2007 Senator Luna Legislative Scholars and Fellows Program. The prestigious internship program is designed to introduce students to public service and state government.

The Gregory Luna Legislative Scholars and Fellows Program is a unique opportunity for students to gain experience as full-time legislative assistants in the Texas Senate. Students will learn how the Texas Legislature operates, while working side by side with experienced professionals.

Each student is assigned to the office of a state senator or the Lieutenant Governor to perform a variety of legislative tasks, plus weekly development sessions and training workshops will enhance the intensive work experience.

The program begins on January 3, 2007 and ends on May 31, 2007. Program participants will receive a $2,000 monthly stipend to assist with living expenses. The application deadline for this program is Friday, October 13, 2006.

Gregory Luna Legislative Scholars and Fellows Program is named after our beloved late Senator Gregory Luna, a well-known education advocate and former Chair of the Senate Hispanic Caucus who served as State Senator from Bexar County from 1993 until his passing in 1999. The Luna Legislative Program advances young Hispanic Americans who have an interest in state government and public service, just as Senator Luna himself treasured.
