Abilene -- State Senator Troy Fraser (R-Horseshoe Bay) officially announced the opening of the Eighth Annual Texas Sales Tax Holiday on Thursday with Academy Sports and Outdoors at their Abilene store. The sales-tax holiday begins Friday, August 4 and runs through Sunday, August 6 and marks the state's eighth annual Sales Tax Holiday.

"The sales-tax holiday is a great opportunity for all Texans to enjoy shopping without paying sales-tax," Fraser said. "The holiday gives hard-working Texas families a well-deserved break. Just in time for back to school shopping, the sales tax holiday gives families the opportunity to save money on things that they need while keeping more of their hard earned money."

The law exempts most clothing and footwear priced under $100 from sales and use taxes and saves shoppers about $8 on about every $100 dollars they spend. The tax holiday has saved the people of Texas over $200 million since it began in 1999 and is estimated to save taxpayers over $30 million this year.

In many areas of the state, the combined sales taxes total 8.25 percent. Without the tax, shoppers are able to save $8.25 on every $100 worth of purchases. That savings can add up for families trying to put their children into new clothes for school while, at the same time, hoping to make ends meet.

"Whether it's back to school shopping, a new pair of shoes, or any other need, the sales tax holiday is a winner for Texas families," Fraser said. "I encourage all of my constituents to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity."

Most clothing and footwear priced at less than $100 will be exempt from sales tax. Customers will receive the break on individual items, regardless of the total amount they buy. Athletic wear that is also used for participation in other non-athletic activities can qualify for tax exemption. Also excluded from the sales tax holiday are accessories such as jewelry and watches; items that are carried rather than worn, including handbags, briefcases and wallets; clothing rentals, such as formal wear and costumes; and repairs and alterations.

The sales-tax holiday was created by the Legislature in 1999. Senate Bill 441 created the tax-free weekend by eliminating the sales tax on certain necessary items. The holiday occurs every year on the first Friday, Saturday and Sunday of August.

Senator Fraser represents a 21-county region in the geographic center of the state. He is the Chairman of the Senate Business and Commerce Committee. He also sits on the following standings Senate Committees: Natural Resources, State Affairs, and International Relations and Trade.
