Senator Fraser Extends the Hazelwood Act

AUSTIN - Legislation sponsored by Senator Troy Fraser (R-Horseshoe Bay) that would update the Hazelwood Act to include those who have served in the War on Terror passed the full Texas Senate Tuesday morning. "This is great for our military families," said Fraser after the legislation passed.

The Hazelwood Act currently allows for state tuition and fee exemptions for military personnel who served in various wars from the Spanish-American War through the Persian Gulf War. Current law does not mention service members who are now serving as a result of the War on Terror. H.B. 503 will update this act to include those who have been deployed as a result of the September 11th tragedy.

"This is a simple bill, it only adds one sentence to current law, but without it, we would be neglecting military personnel who have served and are serving in what I believe to be one of the most significant military engagements of our generation," said Fraser.

Senator Fraser represents district 24 which includes Fort Hood in Bell County and Dyess Air Force base in Abilene.
