Deuell Statement on School Finance Ruling
After nearly four months of debate, a court has ruled the Texas school finance system is inequitable and inadequately funded.
As a former school board member and the father of three public school graduates, I have the utmost respect for our educators and understand concerns with the current system. Last session, I advocated for a greater equalization of the system and an end to the "target revenue" method of school finance. As we move forward from this ruling, I will advocate for more equity in the school finance system to ensure all school districts receive fair and equal access to the state’s resources, while recognizing real cost differences among students and districts.
While we await an inevitable appeal to the Supreme Court, I will continue to search for solutions for our school districts, including an expedited phase-out of the target revenue system. Providing equitable, adequate funding is important for our children's future and that of Texas.
