*** CAPITOL UPDATE ***
Sales tax-free shopping this weekend
AUSTIN — As families across the state work harder than ever to stretch their dollar, I want to remind you that Texas' annual tax-free weekend -- during which families can buy certain items free of local and state sales taxes -- begins today, August 19, and runs through Sunday, August 21.
During the weekend, shoppers typically save $8 of every $100 spent on items such as clothing, school supplies and footwear.
In 2009 the 81st Legislature expanded the number of items that qualify for the sales tax exemption by adding 27 school supply items that, if priced less than $100, join clothes, footwear and some backpacks in being available tax-free. Among the new additions to the list of tax-exempt items are binders, calculators, notebooks, and lunch boxes.
Additional information and a complete list of tax-exempt items can be found on the Comptroller's Web site.
