DEUELL CALLS ON TCEQ TO SUSPEND RATE INCREASE
(Austin) -- On Wednesday, State Sen. Bob Deuell (R-Greeville) called upon the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) to suspend the water and sewer rate change by Monarch Utilities, L.P. which took effect in September. The action was taken on behalf of Sen. Deuell's constituents in Van Zandt County, which Deuell represents as part of Senate District Two.
In a letter sent to TCEQ Executive Director Glenn Shankle, Deuell stated the rate change should be suspended until hearings can be held.
"In accordance with the Texas Water Code, Chapter 13.187," Deuell said, "I am given to believe it is in the public interest that the rates be returned to the last amount approved by TCEQ until a hearing process can be completed."
Deuell also stated that hundreds of constituents could be negatively affected by the rate change.
"I have several hundred homeowners who will be forced to pay as much as 30% more on their monthly bill," Deuell said. "A rate change hearing is set for April, but customers will have to pay the increased amounts until then."
"I hope the TCEQ will take this into account and act swiftly to suspend the rate increase."
