Deuell Passes Bill to Give Tax Relief to Seniors
AUSTIN -- State Senator Bob Deuell (R-Greenville) passed House Bill 5, relating to reducing property taxes on the homesteads of the elderly and disabled. The bill is necessary following the property tax reductions enacted by the Legislature and signed by Governor Perry.
Deuell, who serves on the Senate Finance Committee, said the change is needed to ensure senior citizens get proportionate tax relief.
"Currently, a senior who has had their property tax rate frozen may not benefit from the property tax relief we passed," Deuell said. "This bill fixes that and ensures the elderly and disabled get the same reduction."
House Bill 5, authored by Rep. Leo Berman (R-Tyler), passed the House of Representatives earlier in the session and will now be sent to the Governor for his signature.
"This idea was designated as an emergency item by Governor Perry and I applaud him for that," Deuell said. "This is simply the right thing to do and I thank my colleagues for their support."
