Deuell Files Bill to Give Tax Relief to Seniors

AUSTIN -- State Senator Bob Deuell (R-Greenville) today filed Senate Bill 321, relating to reducing property taxes on the homesteads of the elderly and disabled. The bill is necessary following the property tax reductions enacted by the Legislature and signed by Governor Perry.

Deuell, who serves on the Senate Finance Committee, said the change is needed to ensure senior citizens get proportionate tax relief.

"Currently, a senior who has had their property tax rate frozen may not benefit from the property tax relief we passed," Deuell said. "This bill will rectify that and ensure the elderly and disabled get the same reduction."

Deuell also said this initiative is on the legislative fast track and will be taken up early in current legislative session.

"This idea has been designated as an emergency item by Governor Perry and I applaud him for that," Deuell said. "This is simply the right thing to do and I hope we will get it done quickly."
