Deuell Named Vice-Chair of Senate Health and Human Services Committee

(Austin) - On Friday, State Sen. Bob Deuell (R-Greenville) was named by Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst as Vice-Chair of the Senate Committee on Health and Human Services. Senator Deuell has served on the committee since he began his service in the Texas Senate in 2003.

As a member of the committee, Senator Deuell has passed legislation to create a statewide stroke emergency plan with the Texas Stroke Act (Senate Bill 330), authorized a medical dispatch program for rural areas (Senate Bill 523) and set up a Medicaid buy-in program for the working disabled (Senate Bill 565).

Sen. Jane Nelson, the Health and Human Services Committee Chair, said Sen. Deuell has earned his assignment by being an effective leader on health issues.

"The Senate Committee on Health and Human Services often turns to Senator Deuell for his first-hand knowledge as a medical doctor," Nelson said. "His insight helps us gauge how decisions we make in the Texas Legislature will impact Texas patients and their ability to access quality health care."

Sen. Deuell has been recognized by many groups for his leadership on health issues in the Texas Senate. He was named one of "Texas Medicine's Best," by the Texas Medical Association, received the "Heart of Honor," award from the American Heart Association and was named "Legislator of the Year," by the Texas Association of Community Health Centers.

In addition, Sen. Deuell also retained his Vice-Chairmanship of the Senate Nominations Committee, as well as his place on the Senate Finance Committee and Senate Committee on Intergovernmental Relations.
