Texas Senate Honors Bob Hope on 100th Birthday
AUSTIN -- On Thursday, the members of the Texas Senate passed a resolution to honor Bob Hope on his 100th birthday. Senate Resolution 945, by Sen. Bob Deuell, praised Mr. Hope for his many years of service to the United States military through his efforts with the USO.
Sen. Deuell, a former professional musician who once performed with Bob Hope, said we owe a debt of gratitude to him.
"Throughout my life, I have run into veterans of our armed forces who benefitted from his shows," Deuell said. "I think Mr. Hope's career as an actor and entertainer is known to everyone, but he gave up his Christmases and holiday seasons to go places for our troops, in some cases even with his own safety in jeopardy."
"He had an unwavering commitment to the morale of the American military personnel, and we are very happy to honor him on his 100th birthday."
Joining Deuell in the Senate chamber were representatives of the USO, the organization which sponsored Hope and other entertainers.
Several other Senators joined Deuell in voicing their support of Mr. Hope, the U.S. military and veterans. Speaking in favor of the resolution were Sen. Leticia Van de Putte (D-San Antonio), Sen. Judith Zaffirini (D-Laredo) and Sen. Eddie Lucio (D-Brownsville).
