Statement by Senator Glenn Hegar in Response to SAWS' Filing of a Frivolous Lawsuit in Travis District Court Today

"It is ironic, as we celebrate the first day of school and enjoy the excitement it brings for parents and students, that SAWS has picked today to file a baseless and frivolous lawsuit. This move is akin to a mean-spirited schoolyard bully picking on his classmates in a desperate grab for attention.

"With Texas in the midst of one of the worst droughts on record and faced with a clear call for decisive action, SAWS decided to file a groundless and frivolous lawsuit rather than work to find real solutions to its local and regional water needs. The irony that SAWS has filed this lawsuit in Travis County on the first day of mandatory water rationing in Austin due to the severe drought conditions, is not lost on me or the constituents I represent. Critical times like these call for banding together to work toward solutions, not playing politics, pointing fingers, or lamely attempting to pass the buck.

"With today's action, SAWS sends the truly reprehensible message that politics and the desire to find a better deal trump the need to work with others. As a State Senator and former resident of San Antonio, my reaction is utter disappointment because I realize that SAWS has the ability to work towards finding real answers to our region and State's water needs. However, today they have chosen the route of harassment and intimidation rather than leadership and cooperation."
