Statement of Senator Rodney Ellis on Smoking Ban
Senator Rodney Ellis today released a statement commenting on the removal of smoke-free provisions from SB 1811
"I am extremely disappointed that the will of the people has again been thwarted by the Texas legislature when it comes to passing Smoke-Free legislation. It is a sad day because the people and a majority of both the House and Senate want Texas public spaces and workplaces to be smoke-free.
"Just yesterday we passed an initiative to ban texting while driving, a very serious and necessary reform. From 2002 through 2010, 16,000 people were killed across the nation because of texting while driving. Meanwhile, every year 50,000 people die due to second-hand smoke, yet this legislature has again failed to act.
"This is a very sad day for the legislature and for the people of Texas."
