State Senator Rodney Ellis Responds to AZ Immigration Law

Senator Ellis issued the following statement in response to Arizona's new state law that requires law enforcement officers to compel individuals to produce papers verifying immigration status if the officer determines a "reasonable suspicion" exists as to the individual's immigration status.

(Houston, TX)—"An approach similar to the controversial Arizona immigration law is wrong for Texas, and I pledge to oppose such legislation when the Legislature convenes in January 2011. When a state takes such a drastic and rash approach toward immigration reform, it is a clear call for comprehensive immigration reform at the federal level. Simply put, the United States cannot function with fifty states with fifty different immigration policies—especially when those policies potentially run afoul of the Constitution. I urge Congress to begin immediately working to pass fair and workable immigration reform legislation."
