NELSON TO CO-CHAIR INTERIM STUDY ON HEALTH CARE MANDATES

AUSTIN -- Lieutenant Governor Rick Perry this week announced that State Senator Jane Nelson, R-Flower Mound, will serve as co-chair of the Joint Interim Committee on Health Care Mandates.

The committee is charged with studying the impact of health care mandates on costs and premiums of health benefit plans in Texans and making recommendations to the Legislature in the form of a report due Jan. 1, 2001. The committee will also study the number and percentage of Texans covered by health benefit plans.

"Health care plans should provide Texas families with access to the best medical care possible and to a wide variety of treatment options. At the same time we want our families to have health plans that are affordable," Senator Nelson, who chairs the Senate Health Services Committee, said. "Trying to balance these goals can sometimes be an enormous policy challenge, but I believe we have an opportunity here to get a clear picture on the relationship between health mandates and health care costs. I am honored to help lead this committee, and I am eager to begin our work."

The Texas Department of Insurance will assist the committee using $250,000 appropriated by the Legislature for this mission. The committee, made up of five Senators and five House members, is expected to hold public hearings throughout the state over the next several months. The House co-chair will be State Rep. Pete Gallego.

Senator Nelson represents Senate District 12, which includes parts of Dallas, Denton, Ellis and Tarrant counties.
