NELSON NAMED LEGISLATOR OF THE YEAR BY AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION

AUSTIN -- State Senator Jane Nelson, R-Flower Mound, has been named Legislator of the Year by the Texas chapter of the American Heart Association. The organization dedicated to fighting heart disease and stroke will present the award tonight during a banquet in Fort Worth.

"Senator Nelson has distinguished herself as a committed leader on issues that we believe will have a significant impact on reducing heart disease and stroke within our state. We thank her for her dedication to this cause and would like to express our appreciation and admiration for her service," said Randy G. Pennington, the association's Chairman of the Board.

During the most recent legislative session, Senator Nelson was appointed Chairman of the Senate Health Services Committee. She ushered several pieces of legislation aimed at improving the health of Texans through the Legislature, including two key bills targeting cardiovascular disease.

One measure will establish the Texas Council on Cardiovascular Disease and Stroke to help more than 100 private and nonprofit agencies around the state in their effort to reduce the risks of heart disease. Another bill she authored will promote the use of automatic defibrillators, lifesaving devices that can restart the heart after cardiac arrest, by shielding from liability good Samaritans who use the device at the scene of an emergency.

"I count the American Heart Association as one of the most important organizations in the state. The group's work in preventative health care provides an invaluable service to all Texans," Senator Nelson said. "To be honored by such a dedicated group of people is a true honor. I am deeply appreciative of this gesture, and I look forward to working with the association in the future to create a healthier Texas."

Senator Nelson represents Senate District 12, which includes parts of Dallas, Denton, Ellis and Tarrant counties.
