WELFARE REFORM BILL PASSES SENATE PANEL

AUSTIN - Welfare recipients convicted of felony drug charges will no longer be eligible for cash benefits under legislation approved today by the Senate Health Services Committee. Senate Bill 51 authored by Senator Jane Nelson, R-Flower Mound, now goes to the full Senate.

The bill brings Texas in line with federal law on cash TANF benefits that will apply to all states beginning in 2002.

"Under no circumstances should taxpayer money be used to support someone's drug habit," Nelson said. "And it is important to remember that this bill applies only to drug felons, people who have committed serious drug offenses such as selling drugs to children."

Senator Nelson represents Senate District 12, which includes parts of Dallas, Denton, Ellis and Tarrant counties. She is Chairman of the Senate Health Services Committee.
