NELSON APPOINTED TO ELECTRIC DE-REG COMMITTEE

AUSTIN - State Senator Jane Nelson, R-Flower Mound, has been appointed to a Senate panel which will make recommendations on whether the electric power industry in Texas should be deregulated. Lt. Governor Bob Bullock today announced that Nelson and six other senators will comprise the Senate Interim Committee on Electric Utility Restructuring.

The committee will study the possible transition to competitive electric markets. The group will issue a status report by March 1, 1998 and will make its recommendations to the 1999 Legislature in a final report by October 1, 1998.

"This committee faces the challenging task of determining how Texans' electricity needs will be met in the next century," Senator Nelson commented. "How we answer that question will greatly affect Texas families and business. I look forward to working on this issue."

The committee will explore issues such as possible dates for the opening of a competitive electricity market, potential rate reductions, and consumer safeguards. The other committee members are Senators David Sibley (Chair), Ken Armbrister, David Cain, Gonzalo Barrientos, Teel Bivins, and Troy Fraser.
