SENATOR NELSON RECEIVES PATIENT ADVOCACY AWARD

AUSTIN - State Senator Jane Nelson, R-Flower Mound, will receive the Patient Advocacy Award this Saturday, August 2 in Galveston, which is presented by the Texas Academy of Family Physicians (TAFP).

Commenting on the award, Dr. Sheri Talley, TAFP President, said, "The agenda of the TAFP is not one of financial gain, nor self promotion, rather one to improve the lives of our patients. My desire for the Academy has been to choose those select legislators who have sought to make a true difference in the lives of our patients." Talley said that Senator Nelson was chosen because she "demonstrated a unique commitment to improving the public health and the provision of medical care in Texas."

Senator Nelson said, "I'm very honored to have been chosen for this recognition. During the session, the TAFP was very supportive of legislation I pursued to protect the doctor-patient relationship." Nelson authored or co-authored several bills to reform the managed health care industrtry. Senate Bill 384 requires that HMO employees who make decisions about whether a service will be covered be physicians, registered nurses, physician assistants, or mental health professionals. "With Senate Bill 384, patients can be assured that the personnel performing these decision-making functions will be medically qualified," Nelson said.

TAFP also supported an important bill co-authored by Senator Nelson which gives Texas some of the strongest laws in the country to prevent juvenile access to tobacco. Senate Bill 55 will make it harder for teenagers to buy cigarettes and imposes penalties for a minor possessing tobacco.
