SUNSET ADVISORY COMMISSION BEGINS TWO DAYS OF HEARINGS

AUSTIN – The Sunset Advisory Commission, chaired by Senator Jane Nelson, R-Flower Mound, today began two days of public hearings on recommendations for sweeping reforms of the first wave of agencies undergoing Sunset reviews during the current cycle, including the University Interscholastic League (UIL) and four health and human service agencies.

"Our job is to evaluate whether these agencies and their programs are still necessary and, if so, how to structure them to be successful in carrying out their missions," Senator Nelson said. "We have a long way to go in this process. Nothing is set in stone. We need public input to ensure these agencies are running efficiently and effectively."

The Commission is taking testimony on Sunset reports for UIL; the Department of Assistive and Rehabilitative Services; the Department of Family and Protective Services; the Department of State Health Services; and the Department of Aging and Disability Services. The hearing can be viewed online at www.senate.state.tx.us.

Today the Sunset Commission is hearing testimony from Sunset staff and each of the agencies, as well as public testimony on UIL. Tomorrow, public testimony for each of the health and human services agencies will be heard. The Sunset Commission will also accept official public testimony online through next Monday, June 30th.

At the next Sunset Advisory Commission meeting to be held on August 13th, members will vote on whether to accept, modify or reject the recommendations of Sunset staff. Those decisions will result in legislation to be filed in the next legislative session. Final decisions on the future of all these agencies ultimately rest with the Legislature.

Each of the reports being discussed by the Sunset Advisory Commission during this week's hearings can be viewed online at www.sunset.texas.gov.

SENATOR JANE NELSON represents District 12, including portions of Denton and Tarrant counties. She is the only person to serve twice as the chair of the Sunset Advisory Commission and also serves as chair of the Senate Health and Human Services Committee. She is the highest ranking Republican in the Senate.
