SENATE HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES COMMITTEE RECEIVES NEW INTERIM CHARGES

AUSTIN — The Senate Health and Human Services Committee, led by Texas State Senator Jane Nelson, R-Flower Mound, today received additional interim charges from the Office of the Lieutenant Governor. The Committee will evaluate ways to reduce prescription drug abuse in Texas and monitor the implementation of laws that were addressed by the Committee during the 83rd Regular Legislative Session.

"The abuse of pharmaceuticals is taking a toll on Texans, and this interim study will allow us to examine strategies to reduce prescription drug abuse in Texas," said Senator Jane Nelson. "We also need to make sure that the major legislation we approved last session is achieving the outcomes we intended. That includes our efforts to combat fraud, transform Medicaid and strengthen oversight of the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas."

In addition to the assignments announced today, the committee has been charged with studying: women's health; mental health; programs serving foster children and children impacted by abuse and neglect; alternatives to the Affordable Care Act; and potential reforms of the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program. After completing its review, the committee will issue policy recommendations to the next Legislature, which reconvenes in January 2015.
