SENATE HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES COMMITTEE RECEIVES INTERIM CHARGES ON ACA, TANF

AUSTIN — The Senate Health and Human Services Committee, led by Texas State Senator Jane Nelson, R-Flower Mound, will examine cost effective alternatives to Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and evaluate the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program as part of interim assignments announced today by the Lieutenant Governor. Senator Nelson released this statement following the announcement:

"If given the freedom we need from ill-conceived federal law, Texas can design a successful health care system that will reduce costs while increasing access and quality of care. I also look forward to examining our welfare program to ensure it fulfills its original mission and is helping people on the path to self-sufficiency."

To date, the Senate Committee on Health and Human Services has been assigned interim charges on: Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act; the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program; women's health; mental health; and programs serving foster children and children impacted by abuse and neglect. After completing its review, the committee will release a report with recommendations prior to the next legislative session in January 2015.

SENATOR JANE NELSON represents District 12, including portions of Denton and Tarrant counties. She is chair of the Senate Health and Human Services Committee and the highest ranking Republican in the Texas Senate.
