SENATOR NELSON RECEIVES NAMI DENTON COUNTY AWARD OF APPRECIATION
AUSTIN — A local mental health advocacy organization today presented an Award of Appreciation to Texas State Senator Jane Nelson, R-Flower Mound, in recognition of her work on behalf of Texans with mental illnesses.
The Denton County affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) honored Senator Nelson for her efforts in the last legislative session to improve mental health, secure a historic funding commitment for mental health services, pass mental health first aid training and to address workforce shortages of mental health professionals in Texas.
"I am honored to be recognized by an organization that is dedicated to helping Texans who are struggling with mental health problems. It was a fruitful session for advances in mental health, and I am pleased that we were able to make mental health the priority issue it deserves to be," Senator Nelson said.
NAMI is the nation's largest grassroots mental health organization dedicated to building better lives for the millions of Americans affected by mental illness. The award to Senator Nelson is one among several Awards of Appreciation announced by NAMI Denton County in recognition of the recipients' contributions to improving and advocating for mental health care in Denton County.
"Although this is NAMI Denton County's first time to present Awards of Appreciation and Recognition, we believe several recent improvements are significant and deserving of recognition, " said Esther Fidler, President of NAMI Denton County. "These include increased funding for mental health care in Texas, the new Psychiatric Triage Center which will open soon in Denton, and the growth of three Recovery International Support Groups in this county. These are just a few of the things that professionals and volunteers have accomplished to improve mental health care in Denton County and which will ultimately result in bettering the community as a whole."
SENATOR JANE NELSON represents District 12, including portions of Denton and Tarrant counties. She is chair of the Senate Health and Human Services Committee and the highest ranking Republican in the Texas Senate.
