SENATOR NELSON AWARDED CHAMPION FOR EDUCATION AWARD

AUSTIN — Texas State Senator Jane Nelson, R-Flower Mound, was honored this afternoon with the Champion for Education Award by the Alliance for Catholic Education at the University of Notre Dame. The award, which was the first in the country to be awarded as part of the Fighting for Our Children's Future National Bus Tour, honors those who help communities make high-quality education more accessible for all children.

"As a former teacher, I firmly believe that every child deserves access to a great education," said Senator Nelson. "I am deeply grateful for this award and for the efforts of the Alliance for Catholic Education on behalf of education."

The Fighting for Our Children's Future National Bus Tour, which kicked off the year-long tour this weekend in North Texas, commemorates the 20th anniversary of the Alliance for Catholic Education, kicked off this weekend in North Texas. Senator Nelson was selected for the award because of her long professional and personal history of attention to education. The Academy of Catholic Education noted that Senator Nelson is a former teacher and member of the State Education Board who has sponsored many substantive education policies in the State Senate.

"We are thrilled to be able to present our inaugural Notre Dame Champion of Education Award to Senator Jane Nelson, who has a long and distinguished career of putting children first," said Father Tim Scully, director of the Institute for Educational Initiatives at Notre Dame. "The Champion of Education Award honors those whose lives manifest profound commitment to strengthen the educational opportunities available to children and youth in communities across the country. It recognizes those whose life's work has inspired others by striving to improve the education for students of all backgrounds through energetic advocacy and service. Senator Nelson epitomizes these goals and this commitment, and has done so throughout her life."

This is one of several awards Senator Nelson has received this year, including the 2013 Women's Health Hero Award from the Texas Women's Health Coalition; the Texas Champion for Children Award from Texas CASA; the Physicians Patient Advocacy Award from Texas Academy of Family Physicians; Senate Legislator of the Year from Texas Nurse Practitioners; and the Courageous Defender of Life Award from Texas Alliance for Life.

SENATOR JANE NELSON represents District 12, including portions of Denton and Tarrant counties. She is chair of the Senate Health and Human Services Committee and the highest ranking Republican in the Texas Senate.
