BILL CREATING NEW DENTON COUNTY COURT SENT TO GOVERNOR
AUSTIN — The Texas Legislature last night adopted the conference committee report for HB 3153, which creates a new general jurisdiction court in Denton County, and sent the bill to the Governor for his signature.
"This new court will help alleviate backlogs and ensure that Denton County citizens have efficient access to our courts," said Senator Jane Nelson, R-Flower Mound. "As one of the fastest-growing counties in the nation, we must ensure our courts are able to keep up with our population."
HB 3153 incorporates SB 290, filed by Senator Nelson, and creates the 442nd Judicial District in Denton County, which has increased in population by more than 63% since 2000 and is now home to more than 686,000 people. According to the Office of Court Administration, Denton County needs 1.6 new judges to meet caseload growth.
SENATOR JANE NELSON represents District 12, including portions of Tarrant and Denton Counties. She is Chairman of the Senate Committee on Health & Human Services.
