HOUSE PASSES SB 427 STRENGTHENING CPS BACKGROUND CHECKS

AUSTIN — The Texas House of Representatives today passed SB 427 by Texas State Senator Jane Nelson, R-Flower Mound, which closes a loophole by requiring residential child care contractors and Child Protective Services workers who coordinate services for children in foster care homes to undergo background checks before working with children in the foster care and child placement system.

"This bill will ensure that these workers who often come into contact with children in the foster care system are property vetted," said Senator Nelson. "By ensuring that requirements are consistent throughout the system, we increase protections for children in our state's care and build on the work we accomplished in previous sessions."

The bill, which was amended in the House to align human trafficking shelter requirements with those of family violence shelters, will now return to the Senate where Senator Nelson is expecting to concur with the House changes and send it to the governor's desk for his signature.

SENATOR JANE NELSON represents District 12, including portions of Tarrant and Denton Counties. She is Chairman of the Senate Committee on Health & Human Services.
