SENATE PASSES BILL BY SENATOR NELSON ADDRESSING ADVERSE POSSESSION
AUSTIN —The Texas Senate today unanimously approved on the local and uncontested calendar SB 947 by Texas State Senator Jane Nelson, R-Flower Mound, which affirms that adverse possession claims are not a defense against charges of burglary, empowering district attorneys to prosecute these claims.
"I filed this legislation in response to reports of individuals in North Texas 'squatting' in foreclosed or abandoned homes and then trying to take ownership through claims of adverse possession - a practice that should not be tolerated," said Senator Nelson. "This bill will give prosecutors the tools they need to confront these individuals."
The bill now moves to House of Representatives for further consideration.
SENATOR JANE NELSON represents District 12, including portions of Tarrant and Denton Counties. She is Chairman of the Senate Committee on Health & Human Services.
