SENATE PASSES SB 743 BY SENATOR NELSON
AUSTIN —The Texas Senate today unanimously approved SB 743 by Texas State Senator Jane Nelson, R-Flower Mound. The bill will better protect victims of domestic violence and other Texans from individuals who continually violate protective orders.
"This bill gives prosecutors another tool to protect and potentially save lives of abuse victims," said Senator Nelson. "The Senate sent a strong message today that we will not allow a person to continually violate protective orders and terrorize victims of domestic violence."
SB 743 creates a new offense for continuous violations of a protective order, allowing that offenders can be prosecuted for a 3rd degree felony for two or more violations within a 12-month period while the first violation is still pending in court. The bill now goes to the House of Representatives for consideration.
SENATOR JANE NELSON represents District 12, including portions of Tarrant and Denton Counties. She is Chairman of the Senate Committee on Health & Human Services.
