TEXAS SENATE PASSES STATE BUDGET BILL
AUSTIN —The Texas Senate voted 29-2 today to pass SB 1, the state budget, and send the bill to the House of Representatives for further consideration. Texas State Senator Jane Nelson, R-Flower Mound, a member of the Senate Finance Committee, voted for the bill.
"I am happy with the work the Senate has done over the last two months and look forward to continuing our work as the budget makes its way through the House," said Senator Nelson. "We accomplished many of the goals I had set for this session, including increasing funding for education, meeting our needs in transportation and infrastructure and addressing our priorities in health and human services."
Senator Nelson chaired the Article II workgroup, which funds all the health and human services programs in Texas. "I am so proud of what we have accomplished in Article II, said Senator Nelson. "This budget is going to achieve meaningful, long-term solutions to some of our most challenging health and human service issues."
Specifically, Article II invested $195 million in general revenue - above the base bill - to fund mental health services. The workgroup also added almost $170 million in general revenue meet the needs of children in foster care and other Child Protective Services programs and committed an additional $100 million in general revenue into women's health.
"Most importantly, we are allocating resources in a way that will achieve healthy outcomes for our citizens," said Senator Nelson.
SENATOR JANE NELSON represents District 12, including portions of Tarrant and Denton Counties. She is Chairman of the Senate Committee on Health & Human Services.
