ADVOCATES DELIVER PURPLE POSTCARDS TO CAPITOL

AUSTIN —Texas State Senator Jane Nelson, R-Flower Mound, addressed domestic violence issues and legislation she has filed to better protect victims of domestic violence in a press conference this morning. Today is Purple Postcard Day at the Texas Capitol, where thousands of postcards signed by victims of domestic violence and their advocates are sent to Texas legislators. Purple Postcard Day is sponsored by the Texas Council on Family Violence.

"Despite the progress we have made, this is still an under reported crime. Unfortunately, many victims are either too afraid or too ashamed to come forward," said Senator Nelson. "To the Texans who signed these postcards -- and to the advocates who are here today to deliver them -- thank you for giving these individuals a voice."

Last year, over 79,000 Texans accessed services for family violence. State funding supports nearly 69 24-hour shelters, 10 non-residential centers and 16 special project sites across the state. Currently, the state budget includes more than $51 million for family violence services in Article II within the Health and Human Services Commission budget for the next biennium. This is nearly $175,000 more than was appropriated last session.

In addition to committing to pushing for additional funding, Senator Nelson also discussed legislation she has filed to better protect victims of domestic violence, including SB 129, SB 130, which are scheduled to be passed out of the Senate tomorrow. SB 429 has already passed the Senate and is moving through the House of Representatives, while SB 743 is awaiting a hearing in the Senate Committee on Criminal Justice.

SENATOR JANE NELSON represents District 12, including portions of Tarrant and Denton Counties. She is Chairman of the Senate Committee on Health & Human Services.
