LEGISLATION TO PROMOTE STUDENT HEALTH IN SCHOOLS APPROVED
AUSTIN —The Senate Committee on Education today approved SB 65 by Texas State Senator Jane Nelson, R-Flower Mound, to recognize schools that excel in promoting student health.
"Far too many of our students are overweight or obese -- putting them at risk for chronic illnesses that can shorten their lives," said Senator Nelson. "Senate Bill 65 will allow us to identify and reward those schools who are going above and beyond to encourage students to take personal responsibility over their own health."
This voluntary program through the Texas Education Agency would create a tiered healthy school recognition system based on fitness assessments, physical activity and other student health indicators. It would allow the Texas Education Commissioner to establish partnerships with private and non-profit entities to provide monetary rewards to schools that are recognized. The bill now goes to the full Senate for further consideration.
SENATOR JANE NELSON represents District 12, including portions of Tarrant and Denton Counties. She is Chairman of the Senate Committee on Health & Human Services.
