SENATOR NELSON AWARDED FOR CHILD ADVOCACY

AUSTIN — Texas State Senator Jane Nelson, R-Flower Mound, has received the 2011 Child Advocacy Award from the Texas Pediatric Society.

The organization praised Senator Nelson's role in health budget negotiations, as well as her work to improve health care facility safety through SB 7. "Senator Nelson was the perfect choice to receive the Texas Pediatric Society's Child Advocacy Award for her hard work during the 82nd Legislature," said Dr. Stephen Whitney, President of the Texas Pediatric Society. "She exhibited tireless leadership during difficult and lengthy budget negotiations and showed an unwavering commitment to public health prevention through support of language requiring health facilities to have policies regarding employee vaccination. Senator Nelson has been, and continues to be, a public servant very devoted to the health, safety and future of Texas children."

During the 2011 session, Senator Nelson led a subcommittee that identified $3 billion in health efficiency savings. As a member of the Senate Finance Committee, she worked to add Child Protective Services caseworkers, and she passed legislation to redesign foster care to help children remain in their home communities. She authored and the Legislature passed SB 7, strengthening public health requirements for some health facilities, in particular those that treat medically fragile patients.

"I am deeply grateful for this distinction and, most importantly, for the Texas Pediatric Society's commitment to protecting children in our state," said Senator Nelson. "Together with these advocates, we were able to achieve important policy and budgetary goals that protect Texas kids."

SENATOR JANE NELSON represents District 12, including portions of Tarrant and Denton Counties. She is Chairman of the Senate Committee on Health & Human Services.
