SENATOR NELSON TO CHAIR ALZHEIMER'S PANEL

AUSTIN -- Texas State Senator Jane Nelson, R-Flower Mound, has been appointed to lead a major interim study group examining the impact of Alzheimer's disease in Texas.

Senator Nelson was appointed Senate chair of the Joint Interim Committee to Study Alzheimer's Disease. This panel of five Senators and five State Representatives will examine Texas' long-term strategy to address the challenges of Alzheimer's disease, which impacts 340,000 Texans who suffer from the disease and approximately 900,000 unpaid caregivers who are providing care to these individuals.

"Having served as the primary caretaker for my mother, who died of this cruel disease, I understand from first-hand experience the emotional, physical, and financial toll that Alzheimer's takes on patients and their loved ones," Senator Nelson said. "I am personally invested in this committee's mission and look forward to leading our study."

The committee must file a report and make policy recommendations prior to the next legislative session. To follow the progress of this and other interim studies, visit www.capitol.state.tx.us, where you may watch live feeds or sign up to receive meeting notices.

SENATOR JANE NELSON represents District 12, including portions of Tarrant and Denton Counties. She is Chairman of the Senate Committee on Health & Human Services.
