Senator Nelson Honored for Legislation Aiding Sexual Assault Victims
AUSTIN — Texas State Senator Jane Nelson, R-Flower Mound, today was named Champion for Social Change by the Texas Association Against Sexual Assault.
Senator Nelson received the award for her 2009 legislation to secure lease termination rights for sexual assault victims who need to move to escape abuse.
"Tenants who are victims of sexual violence at their homes should not have to choose between their safety and their credit rating," said Senator Nelson. "I am honored to receive this award from TAASA, which advocates so effectively on behalf of sexual assault survivors."
SB 83 extended crucial protections that had been available to some victims of family violence to victims of non-intimate partner sexual assault.
Annette Burrhus-Clay, TAASA executive director, thanked Senator Nelson for her passion and dedication to the cause of ending sexual violence in Texas.
"The passage of this bill represents a momentous gain in victims' rights by affirming the fact that everyone is entitled to feel safe at home, and it brings us one step closer to a society that does not tolerate sexual violence," said Burrhus-Clay.
