INTERIM CHARGES OFFER GLIMPSE INTO 2009 LEGISLATIVE SESSION

AUSTIN -- Senator Jane Nelson, R-Lewisville, and her colleagues in the Texas Senate today received their interim committee assignments -- a list of issues to be reviewed and formulated into policy recommendations in preparation for the next legislative session.

"I am working to make sure our community is involved in this process because it has an enormous impact on issues to be decided in the next legislative session -- issues such as mobility, education, security and health care that are critical to the success of our region," Senator Nelson said.

There were 165 assignments for 16 different committees and subcommittees, each of whom must report their findings prior to the next session beginning January 13, 2009. The Senate Committee on Health & Human Services -- one of three interim panels chaired by Senator Nelson -- was tasked with continued efforts to reform Medicaid and reduce the state's rate of uninsured.

It will also review policies to prevent child abuse and improve the foster care system; to better serve disabled Texans; to improve nursing and home-health care options for the elderly; to prepare for medical disasters; to expand the state's health care work force; and to fairly compensate health care providers for services to the poor.

"These issues are critically important because they affect the physical health of our citizens and the fiscal health of our economy," Senator Nelson. "We will have the opportunity to put our health and human services under a microscope to ensure that they are being delivered efficiently and, most important, safely."
