DOMESTIC VIOLENCE PREVENTION BILL HEADING TO GOVERNOR

AUSTIN -- The Texas House of Representatives today approved SB 44 by Senator Jane Nelson, R-Lewisville, raising standards for court-ordered services designed to reduce the prevalence of family violence.

"When we talk about domestic violence, we often refer to breaking the cycle of abuse because so often it is passed down from generation to generation," Senator Nelson said. "To truly break that cycle, we need more than anger management. We need a comprehensive program that will prevent recidivism."

SB 44 by Senator Nelson creates an accreditation process for what is known as Battery Intervention Prevention Programs, which a court may order for a defendant. Having passed both the Senate and the House, the bill will soon arrive on the Governor's desk. The Governor has 10 days in which to sign bills into law, veto them or allow them to become law without his signature.

If it becomes law, SB 44 will be effective September 1, 2007.

Senator Nelson represents District 12, which includes several communities in Tarrant and Denton counties.
