MYSPACE.COM EDUCATION BILL ADVANCES IN SENATE

AUSTIN --- Legislation designed to educate students about danger on the Internet won approval from the Senate Committee on Education today and will proceed to the full Senate for further consideration.

"We need to educate students about how to protect themselves against online predators who routinely scan personal profiles posted on social networking sights such as MySpace.Com in search of victims," said the bill's author, State Senator Jane Nelson, R-Lewisville.

SB 136 by Senator Nelson directs the Texas School Safety Center to develop Internet safety curriculum in cooperation with the Office of the Attorney General. The curriculum will be made available to local schools, which will have the option to disseminate this information to students and parents.

The Center for Missing and Exploited Children reported more than 2,600 incidents involving the enticement of children online. Some of those cases led to disappearances, violent crime and even murder, which is why Senator Nelson filed this legislation.

Senator Jane Nelson, R-Lewisville, represents District 12, encompassing parts of Tarrant and Denton counties.
