SENATOR NELSON RECEIVES UNITED WAY AWARD, PARTICIPATES IN CAMPAIGN TO PREVENT CHILD ABUSE

GRAPEVINE -- Texas State Senator Jane Nelson, R-Lewisville, offered her support for the United Way of Tarrant County's 2005 Child Abuse and Neglect Awareness Campaign by recording a radio spot airing on KLTY radio (94.9 FM) to promote community efforts to deter child abuse.

Senator Nelson, who authored legislation reforming the state's protective services in response to a series of tragedies involving abused or neglected children, was also named State Legislator of the Year by the United Ways of Texas.

"Unfortunately, legislation alone will not stop child abuse in Texas. This is a community problem that requires a community response," Senator Nelson said. "I am so pleased that the United Way of Tarrant County has undertaken this awareness campaign. There are children living in danger in our community, and they need our help."

Senator Nelson's radio spot is part of the United Way of Tarrant County's 2005 Child Abuse and Neglect "Don't Turn Away" Campaign, which also features print ads, bus and bench ads, billboards, free posters, a resource guide and a speakers bureau of individuals who can speak to your organization about how to help stop child abuse. For more information, visit www.dontturnaway.org or contact the United Way's community information and referral service by dialing 2-1-1.

"We appreciate Senator Nelson's legislative leadership on this issue and her support of this important campaign. It is vital that our elected officials work together with community organizations such as the United Way to address this issue," said Pat Cheong, Assistant Vice President of the United Way of Tarrant County.

SENATOR JANE NELSON, R-LEWISVILLE, represents District 12, which includes parts of Tarrant and Denton counties.
